The Priaulx Library has a large and important collection of local photographs, including part of the Carel Toms photograph collection. The boy in Toms' photograph above has just found a local delicacy, an ormer; the delight on his face is familiar to all Guernseymen and women!
In July, 2008, the Library staged a very successful exhibition of some of its 19th-century photographs at the Gallery in Mansell Street, St Peter Port. The Gallery hosted a second exhibition of a new set of photographs in late 2009. Althought the exhibition has ended, reproductions of the photographs are now for sale. New: A preliminary catalogue of the photographs from the 2009 exhibition is now online; a full catalogue is in preparation.
A selection of reproductions from 2008 is available to buy. Here are just some of the photographs shown in the 2008 exhibition: all images are ©The Priaulx Library. A catalogue of the 2008 prints is available for download as a .pdf file.
If you would like to purchase a print from either of the exhibitions, please contact the Gallery. More images and photographs can be purchased from the Priaulx Library shop.
Volunteers from the Friends of the Priaulx Library are helping staff to undertake a major digitisation project of the collection which will help to index and preserve the collection for future generations. This is not yet available online, but parts of it can be viewed in-house.
