Copying and Reproduction

The Priaulx Library offers a wide range of copying facilities and can supply copies in a range of formats. A guide to the fees charged can be found here.

Reproduction of some material may not be possible and any copying of Priaulx Library-owned material, or of copyrighted material, may be restricted. Below is an outline of the facilities available, the costs, and potential restrictions. Reproduction of images for publication or commercial purposes has a separate pricing structure. Please see below for details.

Items that are not sent electronically are subject to postal charges.

Photocopying

20p for A4
25p for A3

Photographs, certain bound volumes and newspapers in poor condition will not usually be photocopied. The staff will be able to provide guidance. Please be aware that copyright restrictions will apply.

Print from Microfilm
£1 for an A3 or A4 print-out.

The microfilms are copies of from material NOT owned by the Priaulx Library. Copying is therefore restricted to a very small volume for personal research only.

Scanning
£2 for hard copy or digital format.

Images will normally be supplied in .jpeg format. Digital images will be supplied on a CD-R, but we are also happy to upload them onto a portable hard-drive if this is required.

Newspapers
For large format newspapers only (i.e. larger than A2) The basic cost is £16 for a 4-page newspaper, and the price rises by £1 per page thereafter.  Please refer to the following list:

4 pages - £16
6 pages - £18
8 pages - £20
10 pages - £22
12 pages - £24
14 pages - £26
16 pages - £28

Large format scanning is outsourced and therefore has a higher cost. The Library is happy to copy whole editions of newspapers, as quoted above, but reserves the right to refuse copying if the condition of the newspaper is not suitable for scanning, or if the newspaper exceeds 16 pages.

Digital Camera
The library will allow clients to make copies of documents with their own digital camera for a fee of £2.50. Permission must be sought before taking any photographs.  Staff must be informed of what has been copied in this way as all copies made with a digital camera are subject to the same copyright restrictions as other formats.

Reproduction for Educational/Non-commercial purposes

A standard fee of £10 will be levied for the use of an image in an educational or non-commercial publication. Examples include a doctoral thesis, or charitable publication. The Chief Librarian reserves the right to waive the fee in some circumstances.

The publication of all images owned by the Priaulx Library, whether they have been supplied at a cost or not, must be accompanied by the following words:

© The Priaulx Library, Guernsey

All Copyright restrictions will apply.

Reproduction for Commercial Publication purposes

A guide to fees can be found here.

The Priaulx Library will attempt to supply images in a format requested by the client, but reserves the right to supply an image in an alternative format, or refuse to reproduce an item, depending on the condition of the original, or if the request conflicts with its conservation policy.

The Priaulx Library owns and retains the copyright on all reproductions. Clients may not reproduce any supplied images, or any reason, or in any format, without prior permission from the Priaulx Library.

Copyright

Reproduction of copyrighted material is limited by the Copyright (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Ordinance, 2005. The duration of copyright varies according to the type of publication. For books, copyright generally lasts for 70 years after the author’s death. Please contact the staff for further information and restrictions.

A declaration must be signed by the end user of all copies produced and supplied of material subject to copyright by the Priaulx Library for the purposes of research or private study. The declaration states the terms under which the copyrighted material may be reproduced. That:

  • The material has not previously been supplied by any other institution.
  • The material will not be used except for research for a non-commercial purpose, or private study, and will not be supplied to any other person.
  • The material has not, or will not, be supplied to any other person for the same, or similar purposes.

There are also restrictions on the amount of material that can be reproduced from a single publication. For a book, the reproduction is limited to either a single chapter, or 5% of the text. Restrictions also apply to newspapers and journals. Please contact the library for further details.
