A very good year: donations 2016

5th January 2017
A review of the generous donations made to the Library collection from local and outside sources. We received a large number this year, covering all types of material of local interest, from ciné films to town plans, via newspaper and photograph albums. These donations, open to all our visitors to consult, are invaluable and much appreciated by the Priaulx Library staff and Council and, even more inportantly, by all the researchers who make use of them.

Recent donations

The Library is very grateful to have received donations of books and documents from various sources. These include: material relating to the conviction of Gill and LeBlond for 'treachery' in 1941; transcripts of letters from Captain McCaskill to General Small concerning the death in a duel of Major Byng in 1795, kindly donated by Charles Dace, the archivist at Wrotham Park, Byng's family home; an…

Pierre Mollet Fund

Pierre Mollet Junior lived at Les Landes, and was married to Elizabeth Mauger. His will of September 15th, 1882, of which we now have a beautifully printed copy, sets out his monetary legacies to private individuals, and specifies that ‘the sum of £3 per annum is to be paid during the first 12 years by his Executors and Trustees towards printing and distributing a book published in 1867,…

Index to the Sark registers

The church registers of Sark are notoriously chaotic and can be hard work for researchers, so we were delighted and very grateful to receive an index to them, long lacking, compiled by Alfred Ewen and A. R. de Carteret, and donated by the Société Sercquaise. The Index was originally presented to the Société Sercquaise by Mrs Allan R. de Carteret in memory of her husband. The index is bound…

Major Marie Ozanne

The staff of the Library would like to thank Steven Spencer, Archivist & Deputy Director of the Salvation Army International Heritage Centre, William Booth College, for supplying us copies of some of the letters Major Marie Ozanne wrote to the German Commandant of Guernsey during the Occupation. In these she offers to take the place of people arrested for resistance, for example, to be…

Donations 2014

William Howard of Inverurie has very kindly sent us a letter written in December 1800 by William-Pierre Le Cocq from his boarding school in Chesham, to add to our present collection of this young man's correspondence. As with all William's letters, it is fun and affecting to read. Mr Howard, who was born and brought up in Chesham, has also transcribed and annotated the letter. This letter,…

Books and newspapers, 2013

The Library is very grateful to Mrs Hazel Greany for her donation of local books and newspapers, which have come down to her through her Guille family connections. Her gifts include an early guide book to Jersey, Charles II in the Channel Islands , Duncan's History of Guernsey , Jeremie's History , with a note from the author, and a wonderful bound volume of early Gazettes , some of which we have…
