Bouane Debate, February 1819

A poem in Guernsey French, from the Gazette de Guernesey of 19 February, 1819. The title means 'Good riddance!'

TO THE EDITOR. SIR, A friend of mine, not a native of Guernsey, accosted me the other day for the purpose of shewing me an old scrap of paper which he had found in the corner of a cupboard. ‘Can you tell me,’ said he, ‘what kind of language this is? My wife thinks it is German, and my son Russian, but for my part I take it to be the patois of Provence or Languedoc. However, here it is, and as you are fond of curiosities, you are welcome to it.’ I found it indeed to be a patois, but from neither of these Provinces. It probably alludes to some circumstance long since forgotten. I herewith transmit it for the edification of antiquaries.

BOUANE DÉBÂTE

Tu t’en vas aloûté, tu t’en vas à la fin,
Je s’rons donc débâtais d’un fliambai malvawrin;

Et si tu t’en r’souviens, j’te donnimes une trigâle;
Mais tu voulus bien vite faire tous tes fichu bons,
Et nous émaklir tous comme des colimâchons;
Je dimes: ‘v’la quin fra pas; tout chuq y tou ke y gâte;

Et comme une vieille pérukke vite flianqui à cotai;
