MSS Fief Le Comte I
20th September 2025From a notebook in the Staff collection.
The follwing deed in the possession of F P Hutchesson Esq., Seigneur de Comte, Guernsey, who is descended from Mr Le Marchant named therin. It bears on dorso in handwriting of the end of the 17th, beginning of the 18th century, the following:
'Piere, Jannequin, et Michelle Le Marchant, enfants de Denis, [l'an 1393 - effaced]'
Also, another note in a different handwriting as follows: '7 March 1772, as the writing of the act or Bill of Partage on the other side has faded so much it is barely readable, it was rubbed over with a liquid mixture recommended by Mr Milmes (sic), Warden of the Archive at the Tower of London, by which means we have been able to read it easily.'
The present state of the said document is bad, being stained dark brown in parts nearly illegible. T W M de Guerin, 11 April 1896.
